Design Workshop at CTF!
Design Workshop at CTF!
Date: Wednesday May 14, 2025
Time: 13.00-17.00
Place: room 3A340
"Design" has long been a hot topic for both practitioners and academics. To design something generally means to conceive or create something intentionally, which is fundamental to innovation, breakthroughs, and exploring the unknown. However, the meaning of design and what it entails can vary across different disciplines.
Since design is a relevant topic in research, practice, and education, we offer you the chance to learn more about it in this workshop.
Aim of the workshop is to explore different perspectives on design from various academic communities. This will help us better understand how we can collaborate on research, develop joint teaching and courses, and expand our network within the field.
Audience: People interested in learning more about design, regarding research, application and teaching.
Presenters
Pascal Le Masson, Professor at Mines Paris– PSL Research University: Design Theory: Past, present, future of research on design theory
Chipten Valibhay, Postdoctoral research fellow at Mines Paris - PSL: Design-oriented Management: Some collaborative research experiments
Ingo Karpen, Professor at CTF/Karlstad University: Making Sense of Design for Business: Towards an Umbrella Paradigm Moving Service Design and Its Allied Fields Forward.
Jakob Trischler, Associate professor at CTF/Karlstad University: The co-design perspective: Design as a collaborative effort between various stakeholders to achieve better outcomes.
Jasper van Kuijk Assistant professor at CTF/Karlstad University: Designing as problem solving
Moderators
Peter Magnusson and Alexandre Sukhov 2
Outline
13.00 – 13.15 Welcome
Peter and Alex – why are we here?
13.15 – 15.40 Presentations and brief discussions (including a 20 min break 14.30-14.50)
Five different perspectives on design, 25 minutes per presentation.
We will for each perspective (hopefully) get:
- A short description
- The main theoretical and historical roots of the perspective.
- Main research conferences, journals, universities (if applicable)
- Where is the main application?
15.40 – 15.55 Break
15.55 – 16.40 Discussion
Open discussion including dual perspectives, i.e., both research and education/practitioner. The discussion could include:
- What are the common elements of design across the different perspectives presented?
- What are the main differences between the perspectives?
- What are the future directions for design?
- Will the streams converge or diverge?
16.40 – 17.00 Conclusion
What have we learned and how to we proceed.
Warmly welcome!
Peter & Alex
