Research
I have a PhD in Art History and Visual Studies from the University of Gothenburg. My dissertation is about graphic art, graphic artists and an artist network active in a modernist field of art, seen from an aesthetic, a cultural-sociological and a gender perspective. From an initial focus on modernism and graphic art as material I have extended my research into combinations of words and images, such as popular prints and imagery, press images, book illustrations, comics and graphic novels, and contemporary art, often with educational, feminist and postcolonial perspectives.
I worked as senior lecturer in Cultural Studies at Karlstad University from 2015 to 30 June 2023, and I am still affiliated to KuFo, the Research group for culture studies. Before Karlstad I had a tenured position as senior lecturer in Art History and Visual Studies, at Linnaeus University in Växjö, Sweden, where I took part in the research program Concurrences –Narrating simultaneous and conflicting voices, a multidisciplinary research project, supported by the Swedish Research Council for the years 2011-2014. Within this context I did research on contemporary African art, especially about Dak’Art, the Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary African Art in Dakar, and on West African comics and graphic novels.
Between 2018 and 2020 I was a member of the research project ”A multidisciplinary study of feminist comic art”, funded by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies 2018-2020. Project leader was Kristy Beers Fägersten, Södertörn University, and members of the group were also Anna Nordenstam, Gothenburg University, Elizabeth Nijdam, University of British Coulmbia, Leena Romu, University of Tampere, and José Alaniz, University of Washington.
From 2019 to 2022 I was a member of the research project Contemporary Swedish Feminist Comics as Medium for Political Activism and Critique, funded by the Swedish Research council (VR2018-01165). Project leader was Anna Nordenstam, University of Gothenburg, and members of the group were also Kristy Beers Fägersten, Södertörn University, Mike Classon Frangos, Linnaeus University and Maria Margareta Österholm, Stockholm University.
