Forskning
Den gemensamma nämnaren för min forskning är ett brinnande intresse för den roll som genus (eller socialt kön) spelar i relation till juridik, samhälle, politik, kultur och mänskligt beteende. Med fokus på juridiska frågor rörande kön, genus, könsidentitet, könsuttryck, könsroller, sexuell läggning, klass, etnicitet och kultur, ofta i kombination, producerar jag både grund och tillämpad forskning.
Från ett postkolonialt perspektiv, med utgångspunkt i genusrättsvetenskap, mänskliga rättigheter och afrikansk feminism bedriver jag juridisk forskning där kvinnors upplevelser och erfarenheter står i centrum. Min forskning engagerar sig till exempel i våld i närarelationer, olika former av äganderätt, abortlagstiftning, medicinsk-lagstiftning, sociallagstiftning och hur sådan lagstiftning har olika påverkan på kvinnor beroende på deras könsidentitet, könsuttryck, sexuella läggning, klass, etnicitet och kultur. Jag försöker uppmärksamma vilka reformer som behövs för att skydda kvinnor med olika identiteter, och hur vi med hjälp av forskning kan ge både domstolar och lagstiftaren bättre underlag i beslutsfattande kring kvinnors rätt och hälsa.
Jag har också forskat kring kriminalisering och avkriminalisering av samkönade relationer och hur detta påverkar andra fri- och rättigheter såsom yttrandefrihet och organisationsfrihet. Inom min forskning kring kriminalisering och avkriminalisering av samkönade relationer har jag även fokuserat på hur kriminalisering av samkönade relationer negativt påverkar transpersoner genom de stigma, missuppfattningar och stereotyper som ofta förekommer i kölvattnet kring kriminalisering. Här har polisbrutalitet mot, och förföljelse av, transpersoner även stått i fokus för min forskning.
I relation till mina olika forskningsfokus lägger jag stor vikt vid interdiciplinär forskning och på att försöka utveckla juridisk teori, metod och terminologi för att skapa ett starkare band mellan mänskliga upplevelser och juridik. Jag har de senaste åren levt och verkat i Sydafrika och har också haft möjlighet att bedriva forskning i en rad andra afrikanska länder som tillexempel Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda och Malawi.
Som komplement till min interdisciplinära forskning har jag även bedrivit en hel del processrättslig forskning. Med min bakgrund i folkrätt har fokuset legat på jurisdiktion och talerätt inför internationella MR-domstolar framförallt i relation till den kontinentala afrikanska MR-domstolen, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights och de regionala domstolarna för östra och västra Afrika, the East African Court of Justice och the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice.

- Feministisk teori, feministisk rättsteori, afrikansk feminism, Womanism, Queer- och Quare-teorier.
– Feministisk rättspraxis.
- Kvinnors rättigheter, med särskilt fokus på protokollet till den afrikanska stadgan om mänskliga och folks rättigheter och FNs Kvinnokonvention.
- Teoretiska konceptualiseringar av, och rättsligt skydd mot, sexuellt och könsbaserat våld.
- Skydd mot diskriminering på grund av sexuell läggning, könsidentitet, könsuttryck.
- Rättsligt erkännande av könsbekräftande och könsbejakande vård och andra relevanta behandlingar, resursallokering i detta avseende och budgetering för transvård.
- Rättsligt erkännande av könsidentitet och könsuttryck och icke-binära könsuttryck.
- Genusbaserade aspekter av hållbar utveckling.
- Kvinnors politiska representation och deltagande.
Undervisning
Min pedagogiska grundsyn tar sin utgångspunkt i ett aktivt ansvar för lärande och kunskapsutveckling. Lärandet är en fortlöpande process hos varje individ och allt lärandet tar sin utgångspunkt i våra egna erfarenheter, intressen, behov och åsikter. Detta innebär att vi måste lära oss om varandra och lära oss respektera varandra innan vi kan lära.
Större delen av min undervisning har skett inom ämnet mänskliga rättigheter eller inom ramen för ämnesområden relaterade till mänskliga rättigheter. Nyckelbegrepp inom mänskliga rättigheter såsom jämställdhet, jämlikhet, värdighet och mångfald guidar mig i min undervisning.
Jag har tidigare undervisat i kurser i folkrätt, mänskliga rättigheter från ett internationellt och ett regional afrikanskt perspektiv, mänskliga rättigheter och utveckling, juridikens teori och metod, juridisk tolkningsmetod, egendomsrätt, feministisk teori och metod, genusrättsvetenskap, queer teori och afrikansk feminism.

Biografi
Jag har en juristexamen (jur.kand.) från Lunds universitet (1997), en magisterexamen i mänskliga rättigheter från Lunds universitet (2001) och doktorsexamen i filosofi, freds, och utvecklingsforskning (PhD) från Institutionen för globala studier, Göteborgs universitet (2010). Jag blev docent i folkrätt 2011 och professor i folkrätt 2016 vid Institutionen för offentlig rätt, Juridiska fakulteten, University of Stellenbosch.
