Human Geography
Doctoral programme in Human Geography at Karlstad University.
Human Geography at Karlstad University has a tradition of emphasising research on local and regional development, as well as on tourism, outdoor activities, knowledge production, innovation, and the transformation of the cultural landscape. Additionally, landscapes and living conditions are studied from both historical and future-oriented perspectives, and research areas also include questions of identity, especially regarding inclusion and exclusion in different contexts. Local and regional conditions are investigated in the light of various perspectives on globalisation, and increased mobility is also a focal area.
In short, the discipline is characterised by an interest in using critical social analysis to investigate spatial questions. Several doctoral candidates and supervisors in Human Geography participate in the multidisciplinary research school affiliated with the Centre for Regional Studies. Our empirical studies are both based on Värmland and on other regions in Sweden and abroad.
