About SAMOT

Vision

SAMOT´s vision is public transport that succeeds in combining the individual’s requirements for simple, effective, and flexible transportation with society’s goals for the long-term, sustainable development of cities and regions.

SAMOT is not alone in this vision. For instance, the sector has embarked on a partner collaboration (the Doubling Project) in order to double public transport usage in a vision where public transport becomes a natural part of travel in a sustainable society. The public transport of tomorrow is described as an attractive overall solution for both the individual and society; a solution which is expected to:

• ease day-to-day life
• support regional development through increased access to education/training and the labor market
• contribute toward a better environment

This places great demands on the sector, both with regard to developing new services on the basis of travelers’ needs, in order to boost their numbers and make them more satisfied, and with regard to finding new and effective methods of working in the form of role distribution, partnerships, and alliances between the sector’s public and private actors. In previous SAMOT research, this development has been described as a profound shift in industry logic, from a production paradigm to a service paradigm. Simple, effective, and flexible transportation requires a focus on service innovation in public transport. Service innovation guides the implementation of new or substantially improved services, production, marketing method or organization (internal processes/procedures and external relations), which are crucial as regards meeting the public transportation of tomorrow.

Mission

SAMOT´s mission is to actively contribute toward the sector developing in accordance with our vision, by producing and disseminating scientifically-grounded knowledge of public transport and its conditions; knowledge which stimulates continued development and inspires critical reflection as regards public transport’s service and market orientation.
