Action for Organisational Change
The Centre for Gender Studies (CGF) at Karlstad University has had a long standing focus upon investigating and practically developing different change processes in organisations of various kinds from a feminist perspective. This focus on “Action for Organisational Change” involves analyzing, enabling, and generating social change. The Centre has, for instance, undertaken several substantial research and development projects on gender equality work and on strategies for responding to resistance arising from that gender equality work. The focus of this theme is also thoroughly integrated into the Gender Studies syllabi.

Within this thematic stream the intention is to avoid the common divide between theoretical analysis and empirical application. This stream focusses on theorising organisations and methodologies to achieve change, to offer teaching in the area, as well as advancing its parallel concentration upon practical implementation processes. Research on organisations and change tends to either be very descriptive and instrumental—with limited attention to analysis, socio-political implications, and portability of the research—or it is limited by a managerial organisational orientation. CGF’s research profile challenges these limitations in much existing work in the field. The Centre aims to connect robust and socially located theoretical analysis with reflexive practical implementation in research on organisations and change. In this context, CGF offers a critical approach which raises questions concerning notions of change in organisations, and engages with cutting-edge international debates regarding the meaning of gender equality, and the significance of intersectionality and gender diversity.
The CGF approach is to research possibilities for a feminist approach to social change and then enact implementation strategies to advance those possibilities. By gaining knowledge about how organisations situate themselves, the Centre is also able to contribute new methodologies for change. The theme of ‘Action for organisational change’ is framed by the recognition that feminist research on social life is not merely about understanding and clarifying social processes and power relations but importantly about social innovation to advance social justice.
CGF is presently running two research projects that combines practical understandings of gender equality implementation in small and medium sized companies as well as an EU funded-project investigating entrepreneurship and innovation systems framework in four different countries: Ireland, Sweden, Norway, and Israel. The project Gender Academy https://www.kau.se/genusakademin is working with gender mainstreaming in seven different SME’s. The project is funded by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, Region Värmland and Karlstad University.
The transnational research project entitled “Overcoming the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Gender Divide: A Cross-Cultural Perspective” is comparing gender, and national ecosystems of entrepreneurship. Underlying most regional entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem frameworks is the assumption that all entrepreneurs have equal access to resources, participation and support, as well as an equal chance of a successful outcome (venture start-up). However, women are under-represented in successful entrepreneurial ecosystems and a persistent gender bias continues to exist in entrepreneurship discourse and practice. The project further explore the role of technology incubation in influencing women’s engagement in entrepreneurial ecosystems. This project is being funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
CGF is presently a partner in “The Nordic network for comparative studies of the “Nordic gender equality model”. The “The Nordic network for comparative studies of the Nordic gender equality model”, is a collaboration between different universities and researchers in the Nordic countries. Within that network researchers share knowledge around challenges and perspectives in Nordic gender equality policy and practice.
CGF has also played an active part in the project, “Diversity Laboratory”, which concentrated on the regional actors in Värmland and explored inclusive and exclusive practices within organisational innovation and entrepreneurship. One illustrative objective here was to look for possible avenues for change, both within the established partner organisations and also beyond these organisations, such as developing an alternative space for ideas and people. The project was running during 2014 – 2015 and CGF is involved in exploring possibilities for further work in this area.

Action plan for a digital Värmland takes shape
Värmland is collaborating with two other European regions within the framework of the EU project DigiTeRRI to support digital development. Two out of three workshops have been held and an action plan is starting to take shape. Around 50 representatives of companies, the public sector, and organisations came together to identify needs and generate ideas for how Värmland can move ahead on the journey that is digitisation.
The first workshop was conducted in late January with around 40 participants. A vision was established of Värmland as an attractive and sustainable region where everyone is part of the digital society. The key concepts include flexible infrastructure, quality of life, and local activity and global growth. The next workshop took place just under two months later and focused on goals, direction, and concrete action. What should the concrete goals be and what do we need to do to reach them?
Magnus Bårdén, CEO of Compare and Digital Well Arena, kicked the workshop off by sharing a few initiatives launched by Compare since the acceleration of the pandemic a year ago.
“In March 2020, as society shut down, we focused on additional initiatives for companies in the region. One example is the innovation support, which has so far resulted in more than 70 companies receiving support and 12 companies establishing a partnership with the University. 10 new services have been rolled out and another 12 are on the way with new prototypes. We have developed services such as innovation forums, experts on call, and start-up support for new businesses. We also established an accelerator for the top companies. There is great power in cooperation and moving from collaboration to collaborative action – not being afraid to take a risk, trying new solutions, and doing things together. A lot of the time, it’s not tech-related at all.”
Group discussions with different themes
During the workshop, groups discussed digitisation based on the themes of knowledge and competence, networks and partnerships, and technology. The ideas generated were related to elements like concrete training needs, showcasing the great examples of ongoing digitisation activities, improvements to infrastructure, and continuous professional development.
“We will supplement the ideas from the workshop with surveys and focus groups to develop the concrete goals and action plan”, says Éamonn McCallion, project manager at Karlstad University.
Digiterri in Värmland is also connected to the work done within the frameworks of Smart specialisation and the Värmland Strategy. The next Digiterri workshop will be in November and focus on implementation and the next step.
The EU project Digiterri includes the regions of Värmland; Styria, Austria; and Grand Est, France. The project utilises RRI, Responsible Research Innovation –a method for sustainable social, economic, and ecological development. The project in Värmland is managed by Karlstad University, Paper Province, and Region Värmland. The overall project coordinator is the Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna.

I am particularly interested in studying the manner by which indigenous experiences, made invisible in the hegemonic cultural matrix, are rendered visible through the works of brazilian creators. By focusing on selected writings by contemporary indigenous authors, the research seeks to address questions of visibility and representation in ways that might indicate how Brazil’s indigenous literature could help create sites of resistance, counter-memory and re-existence and unwork colonial legacies.

I will do so through a case-study analysis of the games Call of Duty: WWII (Activision, 2017), Attentat 1942 (Charles University, 2017) and Papers, Please (Lucas Pope, 2013).
Pieter Van den Heede's PhD research is part of the Research Excellence Initiative (REI) Project ‘War! Popular Culture and European Heritage of Major Armed Conflicts’ (project leader Prof. Maria Grever). This interdisciplinary project aims to examine how the heritage of modern war history is represented and appropriated in contemporary popular culture, and which modifications or additions can be advised to harmonize these appropriations with the requirements and principles of democratic historical and civic education. Pieter focuses on the representation and simulation of history in digital games set in war-devastated European (urban) landscapes. His promoter is Prof. Kees Ribbens and his supervisor is Prof. Jeroen Jansz. The research project is embedded within the Centre for Historical Culture (CHC) and the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC).

Adjacent Research Environments
Pro2BE cooperates with adjacent research groups and research environments at Karlstad University.
Packaging for Sustainable Development
At Service Research Center, associate professor Fredrik Wikström and senior lecturer Helén Williams are developing knowledge
At the Service Research Center, CTF, associate professor Fredrik Wikström and senior lecturer Helén Williams work on building knowledge about how packaging features interact with different kinds of human needs. The research is interdisciplinary and combines service theory with life cycle analysis. The vision is to contribute to a sustainable future where less food is wasted and packaging is designed, purchased and used with the intention of minimizing environmental impact throughout entire life cycle of the product. A clear link to Forest-based Bioeconomy research is that the Pro2BE researchers can contribute knowledge and data on biobased packaging materials, their properties and manufacturing processes.
Fundamental Separation Science
The group conducts theoretically advance fundamental research in the field of separation science and cooperates with industry regarding purification of drug molecules and high-value chemicals. The group is currently working on Liquid Chromatography (HPLC/UHPLC), Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) and biosensor (SPR/QCM) projects. There are excellent possibilities to cooperate with researchers within Pro2BE. For example, the process optimization methods developed by the group may be applied to processes studied by researchers in Forest-based bioecomony. At the same time, chemical substances from forest raw materials can be interesting starting materials for drug production. Lead scientist of the group is professor Torgny Fornstedt and senior researchers are Jörgen Samuelsson och Patrik Forssén.
Centre for Regional Studies
The Centre for Regional Studies, CRS, is a cross-disciplinary center that studies societal change processes in a regional perspective. The research is interdisciplinary and is about understanding and comparing change processes in time and space, and how these can be controlled in a time characterized by regionalization and globalization. An important area is to analyze the prerequisites for a green change with the forest as a resource. The forest is enjoyed by many and has lots of values for the forestry industry, the visiting industry, hunting, mushroom and berry picking, recreation and outdoor life, cultural heritage, health and more. However, there are conflicts between different stakeholders as well as between the use and conservation of the forest as a resource. The green change that is required due to climate change, for example, sharpened the challenge of transition to a fossil-free society. The research in this field is led by Professor Margareta Dahlström, who is also the director of CRS.
