Collaboration with the business community is important for many of the research projects in Computer Science involved in the creation of future high-tech solutions. One example is the 6-year-long project HITS, High Quality Networked Services in a Mobile World, which is aimed to contribute to the development of high-quality network services for a mobile world.
- All sub-projects within HITS take place in close collaboration with industrial partners, says Karl-Johan Grinnemo, project participant and reader in computer science at Karlstad University. As researchers, we contribute with our expertise and the business community provides us with their knowledge, cases and data, and through this collaboration, companies can improve their products and competitiveness.
Knowledge exchange and sharp cases
Giang van Nguyen is one of the doctoral students in computer science involved in the HITS project and works together with Tieto, a consulting company that delivers software and IT services. Giang’s work focuses on a function in the 5G network called the user plane, a key component and the anchor out of the telephone network to the Internet. It is involved in many important functions in service quality, for example by directing user traffic between different radio access networks.
- What I am trying to do is prevent the mobile network from getting overloaded and improve the system through scaling and load balancing. In my work, I have evaluated and implemented different mechanisms to effectively balance the traffic between different nodes in the 5G network. How can you grow in the network when data traffic requires it, without having to make big changes? It is about scalability and how network operators such as Telia and Tele2 can add nodes and then find a balance to efficiently utilise the capacity.
Giang has spent much of his time at Tieto in Karlstad but has also had access to their test network in Umeå.
- I am happy that I got the opportunity to work together with Tieto, says Giang van Nguyen. I have learned a lot from them, while also being able to share my knowledge in the development of the test network.
- I would say that it is unusual for someone from the university world to have this type of access to a company’s internal infrastructure, says Karl-Johan Grinnemo. It shows that they are genuinely interested in Giang’s work and that they intend to use it. This is a good example of successful collaboration between a university and a company, and where we see synergy effects for both parties.
Through the research project HITS, Computer Science at Karlstad University collaborates with five companies with operations in Sweden to develop new and improved network services that meet the requirements of our increasingly mobile world. The purpose of the collaboration is also to jointly strengthen the competitiveness of Swedish industry. The project is funded by the Knowledge Foundation.
