Religious Studies
Every day we encounter expressions of different religious traditions in our surroundings, in the news, in literature, in art and in popular culture. It is clear that religion can be an expression of both conflict, reconciliation and a sense fellowship. Thus it is important, relevant and interesting to engage in the field of religious studies.
Some of the questions students process and deepen their understanding of are: What is religion? How can we understand religion as a phenomenon? How can we understand the holy writings of world religions? How can we better understand people from different religious traditions? What is ethics and how does it manifest itself in different traditions and philosophies of life?
Our courses are taught by university teachers and researchers, providing established knowledge as well as new findings. An important aspect of our courses is not just to talk and learn about religions but also to be challenged and encounter religiosity. We offer unique opportunities to study parts of the courses in India or Jerusalem. We also offer a steady stream of guest lecturers and researchers from different continents and religions.
The emphasis of the Religious Studies’ research at Karlstad University is primarily on education. This emphasis is suitable not only for future teachers and church employees, but also for journalists, cultural sector employees and interested members of the general public.
Religious Studies in Karlstad generally receives good course evaluations and recommendations, and our students usually appreciate both our applied approach, education emphasis, as well as our dedication. We offer both campus and distance courses. Why hesitate?
