Did you know that since 2010, 314 new companies have been established as a result of our research and education activities – an average of 24 per year? Since 2018, these companies have collectively created over 600 jobs. In recent years, they have generated a turnover of nearly SEK 800 million and contributed to increased tax revenue, from SEK 80 million in 2018 to SEK 196 million in 2023.
Our contribution to growth and development is already significant, but there is great potential to do even more. Today, our innovation efforts are centred around certain subject areas, degree programmes and dedicated individuals among our staff. So, how do we go from good to even better? We do it by strengthening our ability to support the commercialisation and practical application of research.
Society is facing major challenges, from climate transition to skills supply. At the same time, there are unique opportunities here. Given the results that we are already seeing from Karlstad University, we know that we can be an engine in this transition.
In collaboration with several stakeholders within the innovation system, we have been discussing how we can jointly increase investment in STEM areas in Värmland. At the same time, we have been clear that the development we want to see does not only concern STEM, but is closely linked to an ongoing review of the entire innovation support system, led by Region Värmland and Karlstad Municipality. In these discussions, we have chosen to raise our expectations for the regional innovation system: long-term capacity building, relevance for students, research geared towards innovation and enterprise – from idea to market – increased international participation, clear and effective leadership, and proactive skills matching.
This is a success that we have achieved together. And imagine what we can accomplish if we continue to focus on these areas – more ideas that turn into businesses, more jobs and more solutions that make a difference for both individuals and society.
