Even though the snow is still missing, Christmas is approaching, and at Ingesund School of Music preparations are underway for the school’s traditional Christmas concert at Arvika Sports Hall. A festive atmosphere framed by a charitable cause, inspired by the prominent visit of Musikhjälpen at Stora Torget in Karlstad, is promised.
Is there a special theme for Ingesund’s Christmas concert this year?
– Generally, we’ve never had a specific theme. The concert usually carries the subtitle “Grand, playful, clever, and beautiful”, which tends to fit quite well! says Erik Leonsson, who is producing this year’s concert together with Nisse Nilsson from Karlstad University’s IT department. Musikhjälpen will, however, receive a little extra focus this year since Karlstad is the host city, and their theme “Every child has the right to go to school” is naturally close to our hearts here at Ingesund.
Any new elements this year?
– The format remains the same, with the school’s larger ensembles alternating with smaller acts. The latter we call “wild cards,” and students themselves propose what and with whom they want to perform. This year’s wild cards include a jazz quartet, an a cappella vocal quintet, and an electronic piece featuring violin and computer. Unfortunately, we don’t have a new Christmas song this year, which first-year music production students traditionally write and produce. Instead, we’re bringing back the song written in 2016, “Bring out the Joy.”
Is there anything that simply cannot be left out of a Christmas concert?
– There are many recurring highlights! The Lucia procession, TV’s Christmas Eve with the wind orchestra and dance students from Karlstad University, the big band with extra strings, and of course the powerful finale with symphony orchestra and choir performing O Holy Night, which is practically illegal not to include!
Can you promise that anyone who hasn’t felt the Christmas spirit yet will have it after leaving the sports hall next weekend?
– I can only answer with a resounding YES!
