The Swedish Defence University rents space at Karlstad University
2025-05-30From the start of next year, the Swedish Defence University’s local unit in Karlstad will be co-located with Karlstad University.
– This enables deeper collaboration, which will create benefits for society at large, says Jerker Moodysson, vice-chancellor of Karlstad University.
– Together, our two universities can serve as an important meeting place from a total defense perspective, says Robert Egnell, vice-chancellor of the Swedish Defence University.
Both vice-chancellors signed the lease agreement on Wednesday 28 May, which means that the Swedish Defence University’s local office in Karlstad will move into their new facilities at Karlstad University on 1 January 2026.
The Swedish Defence University and Karlstad University are both part of the national initiative Campus Total Defence. As a part of that, the universities initiated a collaboration about a year ago, focusing on education and research related to total defense, crisis preparedness and civil defense. The hope is that the co-location will lead to even deeper collaboration between the universities.
– We run compatible operations. It’s an advantage to be co-located as it allows us to work even more closely and bring more attention to our collaboration, says Jerker Moodysson.
– Together, our two institutions can serve as an important hub for skills supply and knowledge development for total defense throughout the region, says Robert Egnell.
Karlstad and the surrounding area represent an important location for the Swedish total defense with central total defense authorities and a well-established defense industry. The collaboration between Karlstad University and the Swedish Defence University contributes to a coordinated and long-term initiative to support the skills supply and knowledge development of the total defense in Sweden. It takes place in close collaboration with regional stakeholders and constitutes an important resource locally, regionally and nationally.
