She joins the Swedish National Committee for Mathematics
2026-05-05Mirela Vinerean-Bernhoff, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at Karlstad University, has been appointed as a member of the Swedish National Committee for Mathematics. The committee operates under the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and promotes mathematical research and education in Sweden.
Congratulations! Could you tell us what the Swedish National Committee for Mathematics is and why this appointment is important for the field of mathematics?
– The National Committee for Mathematics (NKM) represents Sweden in international contexts, particularly within the International Mathematical Union, and supports initiatives that strengthen the role of mathematics in society. The committee also provides grants and support for conferences and schools, and serves as an advisor on strategic issues. For me personally, the appointment is an opportunity to contribute to the development of mathematics in Sweden. For my department, it brings several benefits: it increases the department’s visibility and standing nationally, while also strengthening networks and collaborations at both national and international levels.
What will your role as a committee member involve?
– I will work to strengthen mathematics education in Swedish schools and promote outreach activities that spark young people’s interest in mathematics, as well as raise the status of mathematics in society and increase its visibility. My work will also focus on promoting collaboration between different stakeholders, for example between industry and academia, among mathematics PhD students, and between the National Committee and other relevant organizations.
Could you tell us about your background in mathematics?
– My academic career began in 1998 as a lecturer in mathematics in Romania. After doctoral and postdoctoral studies at Uppsala University and Karlstad University, I became a Senior Lecturer there in 2011 and a Recognised Excellent Teacher in 2016. My research focuses on two areas: applied mathematics, particularly discrete kinetic models for the Boltzmann equation, and mathematics education, with a focus on developing STEM teaching through digital tools and innovative methods. I also investigate how AI and VR/AR can transform mathematics education, as well as how best to teach gifted students.
Over the past 28 years, I have taught at all levels and worked on educational development projects. I have also participated in several international collaborations that have strengthened both my research and teaching.
