Regular contact with businesses and industry while studying
2025-11-07On 23 October, international students at Karlstad University gathered for an inspiring lecture with the Värmland Chamber of Commerce. The regional job market, career opportunities and key strengths were presented under the theme “Discover the Future of Work in Värmland”. The message was clear: international students, we need you!
– The hardest work is already behind you – moving to Sweden, said Jonas Evaldsson, head of labour market insight and skills supply at the Värmland Chamber of Commerce, which represents over 1,200 member companies. Now, it’s time to think about what you want to do after your studies. Don’t be afraid to explore and make contact with companies!
Among other things, the lecture focused on professions that are in high demand in the region, such as engineers, technicians, healthcare professionals, and teachers. The students had the opportunity to ask questions, and a light lunch was served. Many of the students appreciated gaining a deeper understanding of working life and feeling welcomed as prospective employees.
– It was an interesting meeting and I feel confident, says Minhajul, a student from Bangladesh enrolled in the master’s programme in accounting and control. It’s always good to get information directly from people with insight into the job market, things that you can’t always find on the Internet.
One of many activities bringing the business community and students together
There is a strong interest among students to connect with regional businesses, and 90 registered for the event.
– The visit is part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between the university and the local business community, and to make Värmland an attractive place for international talent, says Susanna Lundborg, head of the International Office at Karlstad University. We want to help students gain insight into the job market in Värmland and connect with local businesses while they’re still studying.
The lecture focused on three key strengths of businesses and industry in Värmland:
- A diverse mix of industries – well-established in manufacturing, trade and construction, as well as IT, technology and business services. Värmland is at the forefront of sustainability, bioeconomy and wood construction.
- A global profile – many companies export their products and services, and international companies are establishing themselves in the region. Norway is the main trading partner, but Germany, China and the US also play important roles.
- A strategic location – with close proximity to both Oslo and Stockholm, Värmland is part of a growing job market region with excellent commuting options and future infrastructure investments.
