New professor of guitar at Ingesund
2024-09-16The teacher and musician Georg Gulyás teaches guitar, chamber music, and guitar methodology at the Ingesund School of Music. After his promotion, he can now call himself a professor.
Georg Gulyás was born in Säffle, and his Hungarian father worked at the city’s library while his Finnish mother worked with the church’s children’s hours. His basic qualification in classical guitar is from the Malmö Academy of Music. After graduating, he continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, École Normale de Musique de Paris, and Juilliard School in New York. He was employed at the Ingesund School of Music in 2012, where his work mainly consists of teaching solo performance on guitar, chamber music, and instrumental methodology.
”Alongside my teaching, I am active as a freelance musician and have been conducting artistic research at Luleå University of Technology since 2020. In my work “The process of Interpretation through literary texts/pedagogical approaches to more conscious artistic processes of interpretation finding,” I explore how an interpreter within Western art music can make conscious the interpretation process of a musical work by using various metaphorical concepts. The background to my research is driven by a curiosity to create a tool that helps me and my students reflect more deeply on musical interpretation. This is for widening interpretative frameworks and enlivening music, in line with learning objectives in our bachelor program for musicians. My study also contributes to developing forms for teaching higher music education. Here, artistic and pedagogical research disciplines also meet as I study how literary texts can be used to promote teaching musical interpretation.”
Grammy in Hongkong and significant solo appearances
Georg Gulyás has an extensive discography, which includes composers such as J.S. Bach, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Benjamin Britten, and Alberto Ginastera.
“Two highlights during my career are my Grammy award in Hong Kong and my distinction as Artist of the Month on Naxos in 2021. Examples of concerts that have meant a lot to me are my solo performances with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Stockholm and St. Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra in St. Petersburg.”
Georg Gulyás will be installed during Academic Celebration on October 18 at Karlstad University.
