MIMM Day – a good initiative from the academy to connect with the business community
2022-12-23On 7th of December, the sixth Mathematics Meets Industry Day (MIMM®) was arranged at Karlstad University. Representatives from Kongsberg Maritime Sweden AB and SAAB participated, and together with upper secondary school students, university students, and researchers they tried to find mathematical solutions for previously unsolved problems.
MIMM Day at Karlstad University has started to become a tradition; for the sixth time companies propose scientific challenges to mathematicians, i.e. problems involving relevant unsolved technological or societal issues in search for a suitable solution. The expected outcome includes: solutions to the posed problems, training of all participants, opportunities for further collaboration.
Throughout a whole day, the participants took on the challenge of trying to solve real industrial problems.
SAAB contributed with two problems, one regarding derivation of Boltzmann-type equations for high-speed flows, and one on engine data reduction.
- I think the result was very successful with good suggestions on how to deal with the problem, says Andreas Nilsson, SAAB Group.
Kongsberg Maritime Sweden AB wanted help with a problem regarding design of good trailing edge shapes.
- We at Kongsberg Maritime Sweden AB have chosen to participate in MIMM Day 2022 for several reasons, says Christian Karlsson, Method Development Engineer at Kongsberg Maritime Sweden AB. We think it is a good initiative from the academy to connect with the business community, to give students examples of how mathematics can be used to solve practical problems in industry we see as valuable. We also think it's a good opportunity to get to know the dedicated students attending the day. Of course, we also see it as an opportunity to get valuable ideas on how to deal with the problems we present, but that is secondary from our side. We have now participated in a few MIMM days and we remain enthusiastic about the concept!
