Industry 5.0 to promote innovation and sustainability in manufacturing2021-04-13
The EU programme titled Industry 5.0 aims to employ research and innovation to achieve a more sustainable and human-centric European industry. Some of the work within this initiative is carried out at Karlstad University. This week will see the installation of an industrial collaborative robot, which will not only increase the quality of our engineering courses and programmes but also strengthen the collaboration with industry partners within the project.
“The modern industry is in great need of skilled personnel in automation and robotics”, says Jorge Solis Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering. “Using collaborative robots in manufacturing makes it qualified work, adding production value and facilitating customisation and personification of products. To improve the industry’s chances to recruit skilled employees, Karlstad University aim to furtherly develop the quality of our courses and programmes. In order to prepare our engineering students for their future careers, it is required a constant updating of our educational equipment in the field of automation and robotics.
New collaborative robot installed at Karlstad University
External funds from the Ljungbergsfonden foundation enabled the purchase of a modern industrial collaborative robot and industrial automation systems.
“The goal is to develop our engineering courses and programmes to keep them at the forefront of the field and give our students specialised skills related to the Industry 5.0 European initiative”, says Jorge Solis.
The future is here
Modern and future industry require state-of-the-art technology with collaboration between humans, between humans and machines, and between machines. Machines can self-monitor, analyse the results, and autonomously optimise operating conditions and production, enhancing efficiency and productivity. A new era has been ushered in, featuring collaborative industrial robots that can work side by side with humans, especially in various forms of small component assembly and material handling.
The equipment will be used for collaboration and student recruitment
The educational plan for industry collaboration is based on activities where the new equipment will be used in different ways on our engineering courses both at the bachelor and master level. There will also be organized study visits, lectures, demonstrations, lab sessions, and thesis work for our engineering students as well as for potential students in collaboration with our industrial partners.
