Increased interest in the law programme at Karlstad University
2023-04-19The number of first choice applicants to the law programme at Karlstad University has increased by 13 percent, compared to spring last year.
– This is the result of great work by our staff and the networking efforts of the Law Students’ Association. Law firms, consulting firms and authorities are happy to recruit our students, says Anders Hultqvist, Professor of Financial Law and one of two programme directors of the law programme.
– It is exciting and interesting that we have so many first choice applicants. We are a fairly new programme after all, with two graduating classes so far, and people tend to be quite conservative when it comes to choosing a law programme. If your mother or father studied in Uppsala or Lund, it is likely you will too. But we have students from all over the country. People are starting to notice us.
One explanation behind the success could also be that the law programme at Karlstad University stands out nationally, says Anders Hultqvist.
– Two years ago, our students came second in the national law championship and last year they won.
In total, the law programme in Karlstad had 3,462 applicants, of which 351 were first choice applicants. That is an increase by 13 percent in terms of first choice applicants, compared to last year.
In general, however, there is a decrease in the number of programme applicants. A total of 18,472 people applied for programmes at the university, of which 4,769 were first choice applicants. That is a decrease by 11 percent in total and by 9 percent in terms of first choice applicants.
The number of applicants has returned to similar levels as before the pandemic.
– The years during the pandemic were special, it is positive that we now maintain the same levels as in 2019. The interest in the law programme feels particularly exciting, says Margareta Friman, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Karlstad University.
Nationally, the number of applicants decreased marginally. Levels are more or less the same this year as last year, but with ten percent fewer applicants than the record admission during the pandemic in 2021, according to the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR).
