The students, enrolled in the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering Programme with a focus on forest bioeconomy, had the opportunity to visit Billerud Gruvön. Among other things, they observed the massive cardboard machine KM7 and interacted with employees, deepening their knowledge of paper and cardboard manufacturing.
- This study visit was organized in conjunction with the course on bio-based materials and products, says Beko Mesic, a lecturer in chemical engineering.
During the visit, students listened to presentations and actively participated in discussions led by several company employees. The focus was on packaging solutions that are renewable, recyclable, and climate-efficient. The visit concluded with a demonstration of Billerud's cardboard machine and Box Lab. In the Box Lab, the CCT10 method is used, measuring paper performance for corrugated board. The KM7 cardboard machine, one of the largest globally, is 350 meters long and 7.9 meters wide. It produces liner cardboard, which customers use for liquid packaging and packaging for items such as fruit, electronics, perfume, and chocolate. The production capacity is 550,000 tons per year, equivalent to 100 million one-liter milk cartons every day.
- The study visit was appreciated by both the company and the students, says Beko Mesic. Students received information about job opportunities at Billerud and the possibility of thesis projects in this field. It is valuable for us to connect with companies in this way, and it's gratifying that companies are interested in hosting our students."
