Teacher Education Student Aiming for the Top of the World in Speed Skiing
2026-02-10Cornelia Thun Sandström is studying to become a teacher at Karlstad University while simultaneously belonging to the world elite in speed skiing. Her everyday life is about balancing studies, training, and mental preparation—and about finding sustainable motivation in both worlds.
– Having the opportunity to be part of the Elite Sports University has been incredibly important to me. I don’t think it would have been possible to study at the same time otherwise, she say
Cornelia grew up in Kil and now lives in Karlstad, but still competes for her home club. At the same time, she is in her sixth semester of the teacher education program with a focus on grades F–3 at Karlstad University and is part of the university’s Elite Sports University.
Studies and competition season—with support from KAU
Combining teacher education with a competition season that involves travel to countries such as France and Finland is a challenge. Here, the support from the Elite Sports University has been crucial.
– I submit my competition schedule, and then they help plan my studies and find solutions that work in practice. It’s not about studying more or less, but about being able to complete the course components at the right time.
She describes the contact as both smooth and personal.
– They are genuinely interested in the sport and very clear that when I’m away competing, I should focus on that. The studies will still be there afterward and are handled through dialogue with the program. That removes a lot of stress.
The flexibility has made it possible for Cornelia to continue studying even during intensive periods.
– Without this opportunity, I would probably have had to pause my studies entirely some years. Then it would have been difficult to keep my motivation up.
The teaching profession appeals in many ways
Her interest in the teaching profession grew after finishing upper secondary school, when Cornelia began working in a school. It is primarily the younger ages that appeal to her.
– I think it’s so clear there. You really see the children’s development and how quickly they learn. They’re also very honest, and you notice immediately if the teaching is working.
Even though her future path is not yet fully mapped out, pedagogy is something she is certain she wants to keep with her, regardless of professional role.
– I will never let go of children and learning. Everything I learn about pedagogy and about meeting different individuals is incredibly useful to me, both in sport and in life.
Elite sport as an asset in education
Cornelia sees several clear connections between elite sport and the teaching role—such as understanding different personalities, the importance of movement, and the ability to meet people where they are.
– Everyone needs different things. You learn that quickly in sport, and it’s exactly the same in a classroom.
She also hopes to be a role model.
– It would be nice if someone could feel that it’s possible to pursue what you’re passionate about.
Goals, motivation, and development
With a personal best of just over 213 kilometers per hour, Cornelia continues to aim higher. Her next goal is to exceed 220, perhaps 225—and in the long term, to approach the Swedish records. But in speed skiing, the right conditions are required.
– The conditions have to be perfect, and you need to be able to start high up on the slope. You don’t always get the chance.
She describes herself as disciplined, but says her drive is more about development than perfection, both in her studies and in sport.
– Of course it’s tough sometimes, especially mentally. But I try to think that everything that gets done is better than nothing. Good enough is sometimes enough.
“I really recommend it”
Today, Cornelia is grateful for the support she has received and encourages other elite athletes who are considering studying at Karlstad University to take the chance and apply to the Elite Sports University.
– If you have the opportunity to be part of the Elite Sports University, you should definitely take it. For me, it has been crucial in being able to fully commit to my sport while still continuing my studies without having to pause them.
