Music pedagogy research
Research at Ingesund School of Music concentrates on music pedagogy and teaching methodology. The research environment is multidisciplinary and involves teachers and researchers in research and development work.
At Ingesund School of Music, we train music teachers, professional musicians and music producers for careers in cultural life, education and lifelong training. One of our most important tasks is therefore to offer artistic and musical training of the highest pedagogical quality.
Ingesund School of Music’s research and development work in artistic and music pedagogy plays a significant role in highlighting different aspects of music activities and operations.
Focus on musical practices
We regard the research field of music pedagogy with its disciplinary foundation as closely connected to the artistic research field: both fields focus on musical practices, and study, for example, performance, creation, learning and assessment in different forms and contexts.
Research in both these fields is characterised by exploratory approaches, reflection and knowledge development. The difference between these fields is mainly that research and development work in music pedagogy mainly focuses on studying the pedagogical, teaching methodological and artistic activities of others, while artistic research concentrates on studying one’s own artistic practice.
At MHI we do not try to separate artistic research from music pedagogy research, but instead we focus on cross-disciplinary cooperation and projects in our research and development work.
Wide field of interest
MHI is a multidisciplinary environment in which researchers and teachers cooperate in artistic and music pedagogy research and development. This wide field of interest include artistic and pedagogical aspects in different musical contexts, both in schools and in cultural activities.
Our research is practice-based, but it is also innovative and leads to theoretical development. Research and development work is done individually and in partnership with other researchers at the department, at other universities, university colleges and institutions. Many researchers actively participate in research environments at Karlstad University as well as in national, Nordic and international networks.
Areas of research
At present, our main areas of research are musical performance, music learning, music assessment, music and ergonomics.
