It’s time for SM Week to take over Karlstad. The event is a public celebration featuring world-class sports, experiences, and opportunities to connect. This year, not least with the Elite Sports University at Karlstad University. Come and meet several of our students, world-class elite athletes on Västra Torggatan!
For many years, Karlstad University has been an elite sports-friendly university, meaning it welcomes top-level athletes competing at national team level who can pursue their studies alongside their athletic careers.
“This group of students spends approximately 25–30 hours per week on their elite sport, and because of their athletic commitments, they sometimes need to accelerate or slow down their pace of study,” says Christian Augustsson, project manager of the Elite Sports University at Karlstad University. “This requires planning and flexibility, as conflicts between sport and studies can arise, and this is where we at the Elite Sports University can help by finding workable solutions.”
Several International Sports Stars in Our Tent
During SM Week, you can meet several of the Elite Sports University’s enrolled students. They will be present in our tent on Västra Torggatan, close to Stora Torget. You can, for example, try on boxing gloves with world champion in Muay Thai, Dalian Dawody; try standing high jump with Swedish champion Melwin Lycke Holm; or practice putting with para-golfer and European Championship medalist Gustaf Stigsson Andersson.
You can also talk floorball with Alexandra Terner from Karlstad IBF, try cheerleading with Ersa Gashimwe, or try on speed skier Cornelia Thun Sandström’s helmet and see the specially designed suit used for the sport. The students will also talk about and answer questions on what it is like to combine elite sports with higher education studies.
