Guitar Symposium with a Focus on Literary Text
2025-02-12How can a musician interpret and convey emotions based on literary text? This will be the focus of Ingesund's guitar symposium, which will take place on February 19 and 20 at the Ingesund School of Music, featuring prominent names in guitar music.
The title of the symposium is "Music Creation Through the Lens of Literary Texts" and includes no less than three speakers.
Stephen Goss, Professor of Composition
Director of the International Guitar Research Centre School of Arts, Humanities, and Creative Industries
Stephen Goss is a Welsh composer, guitarist, and academic. His compositions include orchestral and choral works, chamber music, and solo pieces. His music draws freely on a number of styles and genres. He is particularly known for his guitar music, which is widely performed and recorded. Stephen Goss's music invites verbal thoughts. He sees his role as a composer similar to that of a storyteller, and much of his music is narratively driven.
" In my lecture, I will discuss various works from my latest album 'Landscape and Memory' to illustrate my close relationship with the written word."
Johan Löfving, Guitar and Theorbo Player, Professor of Guitar and Theorbo at the London Performing Academy of Music and Doctoral Candidate
Johan Löfving's practice-based research is centered around Catharina Pratten's 'Guitar School' (1859) and explores whether, and how, such a method can be used to revitalize the interpretation of 19th-century guitar repertoire.
– In this presentation, I intend to explore the literary aspect of Pratten's life and work. This includes both her written musical instructions and the poetic descriptions of the instrument seen in 'Guitar School'. The exploration of literary text in this context raises further questions about its potential to play an active role in musical interpretation and performance.
Georg Gulyás, Professor of Guitar at the Ingesund School of Music and Doctoral Candidate at Luleå University of Technology
Georg Gulyás explores how, as an interpreter of Western art music, he can increase awareness of the interpretive process of a piece of music by exploring metaphorical concepts found in literature.
– In my presentation, I will share my background, my journey in the art world, and the inspiration behind my research. I will also provide insights into some of my key projects.
