How to pay the tuition fee
Here you will find information about how to pay your tuition fee, important deadlines, and what happens if payment is not received on time.
Current students will be able to access their invoices shortly after the second admission notice in student portal Ladok. Follow the instructions and pay the tuition fee by the due date stated in your payment information.
Before you pay the tuition fee
Tuition fees are paid in advance for each semester and usually in instalments.
Newly admitted students receive their invoice in Ladok within one week after admission (or after final selection results are published).
Your invoice includes:
- payment details
- your reference number
- the payment deadline
Admission and the right to begin your studies are conditional upon payment of the tuition fee by the deadline.
Payment deadlines
- 15 May – for newly admitted students starting in the autumn semester
- 15 December – for studies starting in the spring semester
Other deadlines may apply for late admissions or different admission rounds. Always check the deadline stated on your invoice.
The university must receive your payment by the deadline.
International bank transfers may take several days – contact your bank in advance.
How to make the payment
Tuition fees must be paid by bank transfer and in Swedish kronor (SEK).
Follow these steps:
- Log in to Ladok for students using your universityadmissions.se account.
- Open your invoice and payment instructions.
- Arrange the payment through your bank. This can be done either - online (internet banking), or by visiting your local bank branch
- Transfer the amount in SEK to the bank account stated on your invoice.
- Enter your reference number (this is essential to match your payment).
- Make sure your bank sends the payment in time so that it reaches Karlstad University before the deadline.

- Continued non-payment may result in suspension from your studies
Delayed payment may also affect your ability to apply for or receive a residence permit in time.
Incorrect payments
- If you pay too little, you will receive a new invoice, which may delay your admission or studies.
- If you pay too much, the excess amount will be transferred to your next invoice or refunded.
Payment and repayment of fees from certain countries
Due to international regulations, Karlstad University cannot process payments to or from certain countries, including Belarus, Iran, and Russia.
Refunds are always made to the same account used for payment. Make sure you use an account that can also receive a refund if needed.
Application for a residence permit and tuition fees
Until you have paid your fees, any application for a Swedish residence permit is incomplete. You must pay your tuition fees before you apply for a residence permit. It can take around three months for the Swedish Migration Agency to process an application for a residence permit. The Swedish Migration Agency will see in their system that your tuition fees are paid when they open your application.
