Major PhD student network launched in partnership with MAX IV
2023-03-02PRISMAS, PhD Research and Innovation in Synchrotron Methods and Applications in Sweden, is a new doctoral programme that will train the next generation of synchotron experts at MAX IV. The programme will train 40 curious, problem-solving PhD students in advanced X-ray methods synchrotron methodologies and techniques and their application in tackling current and future societal challenges
- Joining an initiative of this size along with eight other Swedish universities is very significant for us. It puts Karlstad University on the map when it comes to synchotron research, says Ellen Moons, professor of physics and member of the PRISMAS steering group.
The MAX IV synchrotron facility
The national research infrastructure MAX IV in Lund is a light source whose beam covers a wide spectrum from UV light to X-rays with a higher brightness and more intense energy than any other synchotron in the world. The intense beam shows how atoms and molecules are organized and interact with each other, giving us a better insight in important processes of life and materials.
The PRISMAS PhD students get to spend at least three months at the large-scale synchotron facility, MAX IV, in Lund.
Swedish initiative involving nine universities
Karlstad University announces two doctoral studentships in March. The recruitment will be a collaborative and multi-step process through MAX IV. The initiative is partly funded through an EU Marie Sklodowska Curie Action (MSCA), the objective of which is to promote mobility and internationalisation. It is open to applicants of all nationalities, as long as they meet the MSCA mobility rule.
Why PRISMAS?
PRISMAS aims to attract curious and motivated PhD students to help them become the next generation of synchotron experts. The field of clean energy in particular needs researchers and scientists who can use synchrotron research to tackle the big societal challenges that await.
- We need more knowledge and more widespread use of advanced synchotron methods in academic research and industrial development, says Hanmin Zhang, associate professor of physics and materials science.
Hanmin Zhang and Ellen Moons will both supervise the PhD students at Karlstad University.
- This initiative will fortify the network around Swedish academia and MAX IV, says Hanmin Zhang. The exchange of skills between the MAX IV synchrotron and all the partners will benefit society through for instance mentorships.
EU investment in research connected to the UN global sustainable development goals
The EU funds 30-40% of the PRISMAS initiative, and the partners involved provide the rest of the funding.
- This is an important strategic initiative for Karlstad University, says Ellen Moons. And it gives the PhD students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about and get trained in synchrotron research. Through PRISMAS, they will be part of a wider research environment which will benefit both their personal networks and their careers.
