SEK 36.5 million awarded to Karlstad University researchers
2026-11-04Several research funding bodies make their funding decisions during the autumn. So far, eight applications from researchers at Karlstad University have been awarded a total of SEK 36.5 million.
The Swedish Research Council, Sweden’s largest governmental research funding body, has awarded funding from its educational sciences programme to the project “Boys’ Reading Engagement: Place-Sensitive Reading Instruction in Upper Secondary Vocational Education”. The project is led by Stig-Börje Asplund, Professor of Educational Work at the Department of Educational Studies, and has been awarded SEK 3,899,000.
Funding from the Swedish Research Council’s educational sciences programme has also been granted to the project “Promoting Pupils’ Reading and Writing Engagement: Enacting School Library Policy in Linguistically Diverse Primary Schools”. The project is led by Anna Lindholm, Associate Professor of Educational Work at the Department of Educational Studies, and has been awarded SEK 5,174,000.
The Swedish Research Council has also awarded funding for educational sciences research to the project “What Is the Significance of Teacher-Led Text Discussions for Pupils’ Literary Reading?”. The project is led by Michael Tengberg, Professor of Educational Work and Subject Coordinator at the Department of Educational Studies, and has been awarded SEK 5,162,000.
Natural sciences and engineering
The Swedish Research Council has also awarded funding from its natural sciences and engineering programme to the project “Neuro-Symbolic AI for the Discovery and Design of Photostable Organic Semiconductors”. The project is led by Moyses Araujo, Professor of Physics at the Department of Engineering and Physics, and has been awarded SEK 4,280,000.
The project “Exploring Non-Invertible Symmetries with Qudits” has likewise received funding from the Swedish Research Council’s natural sciences and engineering programme. The project is led by Sergej Moroz, Associate Professor of Physics at the Department of Engineering and Physics, and has been awarded SEK 4,360,000.
The Swedish Research Council has also awarded funding for research in natural sciences and engineering to the project “Operators and Methods for Boundary-Aware Material Distribution-Based Topology Optimisation”. The project is led by Eddie Wadbro, Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, and has been awarded SEK 4,200,000.
Health and instructional design
Forte, the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare, has awarded funding to the project “Novel Statistical Methods for Impact Evaluation in Public Health and Epidemiology”. The project is led by Carl Bonander, Senior Lecturer in Statistics at the School of Business, Economics and Law, and has been awarded SEK 5,000,000.
The Institute for Evaluation of Labour Market and Education Policy (Skolforskningsinstitutet), the government agency that promotes evidence-based teaching in preschool and compulsory education, has awarded funding to the project “Instructional Design for AI-Supported Problem Solving in Mathematics”. The project is led by Maria Fahlgren, Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, and has been awarded approximately SEK 4,400,000.
More decisions to come
Additional applications from researchers at Karlstad University are still awaiting decisions from research funding organisations. Final decisions are expected by the beginning of December. We will return with more information about these awards and the individual research projects mentioned above.
