Double Degree, Double Advantage: Study Across Sweden and Finland
2026-06-24Students studying on the Master programme in information systems at Karlstad Business School may now receive two-degree certificates, whilst only studying one degree programme, announces Dr Ala Sarah Alaqra, associate professor in information systems at Karlstad Business School.
Through the new double degree programme, being launched August 2026, students complete their first year of studies at Karlstad University and then spend their second year at our partner university, the University of Vaasa, Finland.
The second year also includes thesis work, which is completed at the University of Vaasa. During the thesis process, students are supervised by a main supervisor at Vaasa while also having a co-supervisor from Karlstad to ensure that the thesis fulfils the academic standards and requirements of both institutions. After successfully completing the programme requirements, students receive degrees from both universities. Students may also access Erasmus+ scholarship funding to support their second year of studies at the University of Vaasa.
In what way is this a good opportunity for our students?
– This is an excellent opportunity for students because they can obtain two master degrees through one study programme, which is highly attractive in today’s international job market, says Ala Sarah Alaqra, programme leader for the Master programme in information systems.
In addition, students gain valuable international experience by being exposed to two different university environments, teaching approaches, and academic cultures. The double degree programme also allows students to expand their professional and academic networks by interacting with a broader range of researchers, academics and fellow students.
How does the collaboration strengthen the programme?
– The collaboration strengthens the programme by combining the expertise and research strengths of both universities, says Ala Sarah Alaqra. It creates more opportunities for academic exchange, joint supervision, and broader thesis and applied research topics for the students. The collaboration also increases the international profile and attractiveness of the programme while giving students access to a wider range of courses, perspectives and research environments.
At which students is this opportunity aimed?
– This opportunity is particularly suitable for students who are motivated and interested in gaining broader academic and cultural experiences, says Ala Sarah Alaqra. It is especially valuable for students who are adaptable and interested in exploring different perspectives within information systems.
Why is this being carried out specifically with the University of Vaasa?
– The collaboration with the University of Vaasa is a natural fit because our universities share strong academic interests and complementary expertise within information systems and related fields, says Ala Sarah Alaqra. We have a common goal to focus on sustainability in research and practice, we are both accredited by AACSB – a global stamp of high-quality education and members of Eunice, the European university allianice. The geographical proximity between Sweden and Finland also makes student mobility and collaboration more practical and accessible. In addition, both universities share similar educational values and research interests, making the partnership beneficial for students, teachers, and researchers at both institutions.
