Insurance
Your insurance at Karlstad University depends on your student status. Make sure you know which group you belong to and check what your insurance covers.
All students in Sweden are covered by the Swedish state’s general personal injury insurance provided by “Kammarkollegiet”. The insurance protects you during class, when traveling to and from school, and even during online studies if the accident is directly linked to your studies. Karlstad University strongly recommends students to look over their insurance coverage depending on your student status and consider
General insurance for university students in Sweden
Tuition-paying students (Non-EU/EEA/Switzerland)
All tuition-fee-paying students at Karlstad University are covered by FAS+ insurance, provided by Kammarkollegiet. The insurance offers 24-hour coverage during your studies in Sweden and includes:
- Emergency medical and dental care
- Personal property (with a deductible)
- Liability and legal expenses
- Emergency repatriation to your home country
Please note that routine medical care and pre-existing conditions are not covered. We recommend that you also have additional travel or home insurance for complete protection. You should apply for a Swedish personal number (“personnummer”) to be entitled to regular healthcare at the same subsidised patient fees as Swedish residents.
The FAS+ insurance is valid:
- 24 hours a day during your registered study period at Karlstad University (as recorded in LADOK)
- For two weeks before and two weeks after the study period
- During direct travel to and from your home country
The FAS+ insurance is recognized by the Swedish Migration Agency as a comprehensive health insurance policy for tuition-paying students. When applying for your residence permit, you can use your Notification of Selection Results (downloadable from www.universityadmissions.se) as proof of insurance coverage.

Students from EU/EEA/Switzerland
Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland are entitled to emergency and medically necessary, state-provided healthcare. To make use of this, you should:
- Apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in your home country before arriving in Sweden.
- Apply for a Swedish personal number (“personnummer”) if your stay is longer than one year, which will allow you to access regular healthcare at the same subsidised patient fees as Swedish residents.
While public healthcare covers most medical needs, we strongly recommend additional travel or home insurance to protect your personal belongings, cover liability for accidental damage, and provide support during travel between Sweden and your home country.

Home insurance
We recommend that all students, no matter your nationality or how long you plan to stay, get home insurance (“hemförsäkring”) for the duration of your studies in Sweden. As a tenant, you are responsible for any damage or loss that occurs in your student accommodation during your rental period.
If you have a Swedish personal identity number (“personnummer”), you can arrange home insurance through most Swedish insurance providers once you have received your number.
Exchange students are covered by Kammarkollegiet’s Student IN insurance, which includes limited liability protection. However, it’s still a good idea to have your own home insurance for complete coverage. You may also want to check if your travel insurance or insurance from your home country already covers your stay abroad.
