Climate and clothing
Sweden’s seasons, changing weather, and winter darkness can take some getting used to. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare will help you settle in and enjoy your time in Karlstad.
The weather in Sweden varies significantly between seasons, and Karlstad’s location by Lake Vänern gives it a slightly milder climate than many other inland cities. Students staying in Karlstad for a year will experience all four seasons. Winters are cold, with temperatures typically between –5°C and 0°C, and snow is common. Summers are mild and pleasant, usually ranging from 15°C to 25°C, with long, bright days and short nights. Spring and autumn bring milder, changeable weather, so layering is recommended throughout the year.
Clothing
Sweden has four distinct seasons, so it’s important to be prepared with clothing that suits the weather. Layering is key, as temperatures can vary throughout the day. However, indoor spaces are generally well heated, so heavy clothing is mainly needed outdoors.
Good to have:
- Warm, wind-resistant jacket
- Sturdy, insulated boots for winter
- Hat, gloves, and scarf
- Thermal underwear for cold months
- Water-resistant shoes for rainy spring and autumn days
- Swimwear for summer
- Indoor comfort: cozy clothes and slippers are common
If needed, you can find winter clothing at second-hand shops in Karlstad at reasonable prices.
Darkness during winter in Sweden
For many international students, the dark winter months in Sweden can be a big adjustment. In Karlstad, daylight is limited to around six hours in December, and the sun sets early in the afternoon.
It’s completely normal to feel a bit low on energy or motivation during this time. Try to get outside during the few daylight hours, stay active, and spend time with friends. You might also consider taking vitamin D supplements to boost your energy. The good news is that after mid-January, the days quickly get brighter, and by spring, Sweden is full of light again.
