Host Student programme
Meet new friends, discover Swedish culture and feel at home in Karlstad. Our Host Student Programme brings incoming international students together with Swedish mentor students to help you settle into university life.
Moving to a new country is an exciting adventure, and having someone to turn to can make those first weeks easier. Karlstad University collaborates with Karlstad Student Union to welcome international students and help you become part of student life and the wider community.
How does the programme work?
As an incoming international student, you will join a group with other international students and Swedish mentor students, known as host students. Your host students volunteer to introduce you to life in Sweden, share their experiences and help you get to know the university and the city.
Before you arrive, your host students will contact you to introduce themselves and answer any questions. During the welcome days and Introduction Week, they will help you find your way around, invite you to social activites and offer practical tips.
How can I join the Host Student Programme?
All incoming international students are automatically included in the Host Student Programme, so there is no need to apply. You will receive an invitation by email with more information about the programme and how to take part.
Explore, connect and have fun
The programme is a great way to meet people beyond your own study programme and get to know Swedish culture. Activities may include campus and city tours, shared dinners or a Swedish fika, a chance to chat over coffee and something sweet.
Most host group activities take place at the beginning of the semester, with opportunities to keep meeting throughout your stay. What you do and how often you meet will depend on your group’s interests and initiative.
The International Student Coordinator at Karlstad Student Union also organises activities for international students throughout the semester. From international dinners and creative cafés to excursions and mingle nights, there are plenty of opportunities to make friends, try something new and enjoy student life.
