Tuition fees
Students with citizenship in countries outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland are required to pay application and tuition fees for university studies in Sweden.
Who needs to pay tuition fees?:
You are required to pay tuition fees if you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland.
Tuition fees apply to:
- bachelor’s programmes (first cycle)
- master’s programmes (second cycle)
- freestanding courses

Who is exempt from tuition fees?:
You do not need to pay tuition fees if you are:
- a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland
- an exchange student
- admitted to a PhD programme
What does it cost to study at Karlstad University?
Application fee
The application fee is set nationally and applies to all Swedish universities.

Tuition fees
Tuition fees vary depending on the programme or course and field of study. Fees are published on each programme page.
Tuition fees are paid in advance for each semester.
For the academic year 2026/2027, fees generally fall within the following ranges:
Master’s programmes
- 200,000–580,000 SEK (total programme fee)
Bachelor’s programmes
- 285,000–450,000 SEK (total programme fee)
Music programmes
- 290,000–870,000 SEK (total programme fee)
Freestanding courses (per ECTS credit)
- Humanities, Law, Social Sciences: 1,600 SEK
- Natural Sciences, Technology, Health: 2,500 SEK
- Medical and Sports Sciences: 3,200 SEK
- Music: 5,000 SEK
Important information
- Admission and the right to begin your studies are conditional upon payment of the tuition fee by the stated deadline
- If you are awarded a scholarship covering tuition fees, the fee will be reduced accordingly
