30.0 ECTS creditsThe course centres on the simultaneous process of integration and fragmentaisation characterising Western society today with an emphasis on the field of tension between the global and the local. The course comprises modules dealing with this field of tension. Instruction is in the form of lectures, seminars, and exercises.
Module 1 International relations 7.5 ECTS cr
The module is based on a view of the world as globalisedwith global patterns of cooperation and conflict. The characteristics and effects of globalisation are treated as are the embrace of or opposition to globalisation with a special emphasis on its effects on the nation states' capacity to act, on the relations between international actors and their attitude to each other, e.g. in the form of nationalism, Europeanisation pr universalism.
The module also treats different attempts to handle the challenges of globalisation. The governance concept is central. The empirical and theoretical focus is on integration and on nation and state building and so-called failed states.
Module 2 Reforming the welfare state 7.5 ECTS cr
The module is based on historical comparative perspective viewing the reforming of the public sector in the light of economic, social and political processes. The focus is on Sweden while comparisons are made with other European countries. Different welfare models are compared. The governing principles of modern administration are studied.
The municipal and regional administration levels are studied thoroughly, especially the impact of international trends, e.g. globalisation and Europeanisation, on the contemporary public administration. The governance concept is developed from a local perspective. The complexity of multi-level governance in combination with the increasing role of the EU is studied as are administrative political trends from a democracy nd gender perspective.
Module 3 Methods 7.5 ECTS cr
The module centres on the basics of scientific investigation methodology and approach, with a special emphasis on investigation design and data collection methods and data analysis. Different kinds of theory of science perspectives on the characteristics of a sound research method are introduced.
Module 4 Independent research and investigation project 7.5 ECTS cr
Basic skills in independent research and investigations are developed. Students carry out a investigative task presented in the form of a 20-page academic essay. The topic is chosen in consultation with the supervisor. Supervision is provided in groups. The independent project is assessed on the basis of four aspects: research content, research method, exposition and language command. See guidelines for further details of the asoects.
Students ensure that their essay is made available in the number of copies requested by the course convenor.

At least 22.5 ECTS cr completed of SVGA50 Political Science I, 30 ECTS cr, or equivalent.
