The Swedish Language
30.0 ECTS creditsThe course consists of three modules. Module 1 and 3 are mandatory. Students can choose one of the modules 2:1, 2:2 or 2:3.
Module 1. Theory of Science Perspectives on Linguistics (7.5 ECTS cr)
Linguistics and language reflection is placed in a wider cultural, historical and conceptual context. Writing is viewed as a prerequisite for linguistics. Current philosophical issues on the role of language in reality constructions, knowledge production and science are related to meta-linguistic reflection. The construction of concepts in linguistics fields and their dependence on different theories and knowledge interests are also treated.
Module 2:1 The module builds on and reinforces previous knowledge of Swedish grammar at different descriptive levels (e.g. phonology, graphonomy, morphology) and clarifies how the description is conditioned by the applied theoretical and historical perspectives, thus providing insight into the processes behind the emergence of the current Swedish standard language. The differences in grammar between speech and writing are dealt with. Text samples from different ages are described from a contrastive grammatical perspective while emphasising the contingency of linguistic form on contextual and pragmatic factors.
Module 2:2. Semantics and Lexicography (7.5 ECTS cr)
Advanced studies of theories of Semantics in a historical and current perspective. The conditions and development of Lexicography is studied. Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with a sample of Swedish dictionaries.
Module 2:3. Translation and the science of translation (7.5 ECTS cr)
Studies of the theory and practise of translation. Literary and non-literary translations are studied. In the module students translate autentic texts to Swedish.
Module 3. Essay Project and Seminars (15 ECTS cr)
Different types of research problems are discussed in methodological terms. Students write an academic essay and partake actively in seminars as opponent.
