Swedish Language in Theory and Practice
30.0 ECTS creditsThe course deals with the tools required to describe and discuss the Swedish language and its variation potentials. The emphasis is on current language use, but the course also includes a historical perspective. The tools needed to describe and discuss different text types and genres are also treated. The study of texts combines theory and practice in analysis, revision and students' own writing.
Module 1 Introduction to Swedish Linguistics, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module outlines the linguistic subareas with a special emphasis on the Swedish sound system, word formation, inflexion and sentence structure. The relation between Swedish and the official minority languages in Sweden is also treated.
Module 2 Variation and Change, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module deals with the differences between speech and writing, registers and group language in Swedish language use today. The module also deals with language change over time and the connection between social change and language change.
Module 3 Language Purity Issues and Language Tools, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module presents different types of language tools and their employability for different types of language and purity issues is discussed. Also different approaches to language purity is discussed with a special emphasis on clarity ideals.
Module 4 Text Types and Genres, 7.5 ECTS cr
The module adds concepts and methods to describe textual coherence, structure and layout to the grammatical and stylistic concepts. Analysis and comparisons of texts and text descriptions are combined with the students' own writing.
