Introduction to Swedish law

The course treats the organisation of the Swedish legal system and the working methods of jurisprudence.

The course begins with an introduction to the organisation of the Swedish legal system. Questions asked and answered include: What accepted legal sources are there? How are different legal areas interconnected? In this context, there are also practical components such as information search. In order for students to understand the Swedish legal system properly, the course provides a necessary introduction to the basics of EU law.

The course covers selected legal areas of Swedish common law and public law, beginning with personal law and contract law. In this context, students discuss who has the ability to act legally, and what is required for an agreement to be considered as binding. Basic sales law is treated, including commercial sales law and consumer purchases. The course provides an introduction to administrative law with a special emphasis on the processing of cases by administrative authorities, and discusses the principle of public access to official records, which constitutes a fundamental part of Swedish law, and related secrecy issues. The course also introduces Swedish criminal law, and touches upon various perspectives in jurisprudence, such as gender.

Instruction is in the form of lectures and exercises.

Progressive specialisation: G1N (has only upper‐secondary level entry requirements)

Education level: Undergraduate level

Admission requirements: General admission requirements plus upper secondary level English 6 or B, or equivalent

Selection:

Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
