Adapting to Climate change
15.0 ECTS creditsThe course is based on individual and group hand-in assignments in relation to streamed lectures and other web based material. Instruction is in the form of seminars and supervision sessions in which group results, questions and web based materials are discussed. Instruction is also in the form of lectures, exercises and excursions in connection with three optional meetings, two in Karlstad and one at another venue.
The course comprises four themes:
Introduction
-Current research on climate change from the UN climate panel (IPCC)
-Effects of climate change at global, regional and local levels
-Decision-making, processes and basis for decisions in risk management.
Effects on society and the natural environment
-Effects on the natural environment
-Effects on societal functions in Sweden, Europe, and globally
-Societal vulnerability to climate change
Strategies, measures, and actors
-Societal objectives, strategies and actors related to climate adjustment efforts at international, national and local levels
-Current and comparable examples of societal climate adjustment
-Specialised study of adaptation strategies in a societal sector
-Discussion of strategies for climate adjustment in different places and by different actors
-Municipal risk and vulnerability analysis.
Global outlook
-Comparative analyses of different actors' positions and propositions on societal management of climate change
-Actors, policies and strategies for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Adaptation at the global and national levels.

Admission requirements
The course Climate in Change (7.5 ECTS cr) completed and attended courses 1-60 with 45 ECTS cr completed in one of the main areas risk and environmental studies, environmental science, biology, spatial and social planning, energy and environment systems, natural geography, human geography or political science. Alternatively, attended 1-30 ECTS credit courses in two of these areas with a total of 45 ECTS cr completed, or equivalent.

Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
