Inpatient Psychiatric Care
7.5 ECTS creditsThe course comprises the following components:
- early signs of relapse
- preventing relapse
- cooperation between different care providers and supporters
- the role of inpatient care in the care chain
- basic analysis of behaviours and strategies for dealing with them
- group processes
- current concepts: validation, active listening, motivational conversations, dealing with persons in an acute crisis
- organising the daily life in the ward together with the patient and closely related persons
- inpatient delimitation
- structures of SIP and IVP (coordinated or noncoordinated individual care plans)
- current legislation (Health and Sick Care Act, Compulsory Mental Care Act and Psychiatric Care Act)
- secrecy and medical records
The course is run for one term at quarter pace at Karlstad University with five days of instruction on campus plus two half days. In addition, students study individually for around 160 hours. Instruction on campus is in the form of lectures given by researchers and experienced practitioners alternating with exercises and workshops. A web based platform is used for hand-in assignments linking theory and practice. Students are thus given the opportunity to test their knowledge in their workplace and then discuss outcomes at the next meeting. Instruction on how to use the platform is provided at the course introduction.
