Diabetes: Pathology and Specific Nursing Care
15.0 ECTS creditsInstruction is in the form of lectures, seminars, group work and literature studies. The course integrates medical science, 7.5 ECTS credits amd nursing, 7.5 ECTS credits.
The course covers the following components:
- occurrence, pathophysiology, symptoms and signs as well as diagnostics of different types of diabetes mellitus in children, adolescents and adults,
- the effects of insulin on normal metabolism, the insulin secretion mechanism, insulin receptors and insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome,
- specific symptoms and signs and risks of hypoglycaemia and ketoacidosis,
- diabetes mellitus-related long-term complications (micro- and macroangiopathy),
- specific pharmacology and specific nursing care with emphasis on education and self-care of different types of diabetes mellitus in children, adolescents and adults,
- diabetes mellitus and pregnancy,
- pregnancy diabetes/developing diabetes during pregnancy,
- family-centred care and person-centred care of patients with diabetes mellitus,
- ethical and diversity aspects,
- inter-professional cooperation and e-health in relation to the care of patients with different types of diabetes mellitus, and relevant laws and regulations.
