Specific intensive care
15.0 ECTS creditsThe course integrates Nursing (6 ECTS cr) and Medical Science (9 ECTS cr).
This is a hybrid course, alternating between on-campus meetings and distance learning. Instruction is in the form of lectures, clinical placement (VFU), assignments, and seminars. Studies are conducted both individually and in groups. The course integrates scientific theory and method in relation to the professional field of the intensive care nurse.
The course covers the following:
- Quantitative methods
- Literature reviews
- Pain physiology and pain management
- Traumatology
- Basic pediatric intensive care
- Specific conditions requiring intensive care
- Antimicrobial agents
- Person-centred approach
- Equity and gender equality
- Children as next of kin
- Domestic violence
During the clinical placement (VFU), students develop skills in the following areas:
- Assessment, monitoring, and nursing care of patients with organ system failure
- Medication management and handling of medical-technical equipment
- Person-centred information and patient education
- Context-adapted communication within the care team
- Hygiene and aseptic techniques

Admission requirements:
Registered for Basic intensive care, 15 ECTS credits, and upper secondary level Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3 and English 6/A, or equivalent
Selection:
Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
