Music and Music Teaching 2
22.5 ECTS creditsThe course comprises five modules with the following components:
Module 1: Instrument, 4 ECTS cr
- individual sessions where students rehearse and perform relevant repertoire on their main instrument
- descriptions and problematisations of different practising methods
- group sessions in ensemble play where students rehearse and perform a chosen repertoire together
- reflections on and practice of their own role in an ensemble and basic approaches to musical interplay
- joint sessions, concerts and other performance events where students perform individually or with other students
Module 2: Additional instruments, 3 ECTS cr
- individual sessions where students learn to play different accompaniment models on the piano and the guitar as well as keyboard, electric guitar, electric base and percussion
- practice in delivering texts vocally
Module 3: Music pedagogy, 5 ECTS cr
- descriptions and problematisations of music teaching issues, methodological aspects of instrument teaching at different levels and group methodological approaches to music teaching
- supervised practice on the main instruments in compulsory school or extramural school activities
- reflections on supervised practice teaching
- descriptions and problematisations of secondary and upper secondary curricula
Module 4: Music theory, 3 ECTS cr
- ear training in groups
- ability-based group sessions in which students practise notating and producing rhythms, melodies and chords, and part-writing and composing with digital tools
- descriptions and problematisations of music in relation to humans, ethnicity, gender, society and culture in a historical as well as national and international perspective.
Module 5: Practical placement, 7.5 ECTS cr
Practical placement period in which students engage in various ways in the schoolday activities. Central and local guidelines are related to school activities, planning and teaching. Students develop their professional communicative ability in cooperation with pupils and staff. Some supervised teaching is performed. Students apply teaching theories and transfer subject knowledge into practice and reflect on their teaching and professional development, and on the relation between theory and practice.
