Perioperative Nursing
7.5 ECTS creditsNursing (2.75 ECTS cr) and medical science (4.75 ECTS cr) are integrated in the course, which is offered as full-time study. Instruction is in the form of lectures, literature study, group work, seminars, and clinical placement (VFU, three weeks). Students study individually and in groups.
The course includes lectures in the field of perioperative nursing and the perioperative nursing process. Students identify nursing problems and needs and draw up a nursing plan, in accordance with the perioperative nursing process and in cooperation with patient and next-of-kin. Nursing and suffering caused by nursing practices are analysed in terms of ethical aspects of contacts with patients and next-of-kin. Students reflect upon ethics and dignity in relation to perioperative nursing situations. Skills training is carried out in the areas of aseptic technique, putting on sterile coat and gloves, preoperative skin disinfection, and sterile draping. Students also practise handling medical/technical products and safety awareness. Students study and apply microbiology and hygiene related to surgery care. During the clinical placement period, students continue skills training in nursing procedures which combine theory and practice. Qualitative methods are studied in relation to the experiences of patients and next-of-kin in perioperative care.

Admission requirements
Nursing licence issued by the National Board for Health and Welfare, and a Nursing degree (180 ECTS credits) including a degree project of at least 15 ECTS credits, or a Bachelor degree in Nursing, plus work experience equivalent to one year of full-time work as a licensed nurse, and upper secondary level Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3 and English 6. Corresponding assessment can be made.
When this course is offered as contract education, the qualification requirements for a commissioned are "eligible if they are appointed by their employers to attend the program."

Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
