Prehospital trauma and care
9.0 ECTS creditsNursing, 2 ECTS cr, and medical science, 7 ECTS cr, are integrated.
Instruction is in the form of lectures, study assignments, seminars, practical exercises and patient simulator training. The course is offered part-time and partly as distance education, partly on campus and in the training area. These components are in some cases concentrated to a number of consecutive days on campus.
Trauma is studied in relation to anatomy, physiology, pathophysiological processes, kinematics, care and treatment. Also treated are assessment of vital parameters in relation to pathophysiological processes, trauma location and the effects of trauma kinematics such as blunt force and penetrating trauma and burns. On the basis of prehospital research, students also study concepts such as reliability and validity in quantitative research and how different statistical methods are used. Students study and practise freeing trapped patients in the context of road accidents, structured assessment, nursing and medical treatment and the care of traumatic patients of all ages in the prehospital context. Injury prevention, primary and secondary medical examination, assessment of vital parameters and maintaining vital functions are also treated.

Admission to the Nursing Specialist Programme: Prehospital emergency care, plus upper secondary level Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3 and English 6, or equivalent

Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
