The course is within the field of medical science (15 credits). Instruction is in the form of lectures. The course is a distance learning course with on-campus meetings, meaning that teaching and examinations take place both online and on campus.

The course covers pharmacological concepts, their meaning and significance for the prescription and use of drugs. It also includes the study of drug interactions and risks associated with the use of medicines, using FASS and Läkemedelsboken as key references. In addition, knowledge of medical conditions, diagnostics, clinical assessment, and both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments is developed in relation to areas covered by the nurse’s prescribing rights. The nurse’s prescribing rights and the management of medicines are addressed in accordance with current legislation and regulatory frameworks. Age- and gender-related aspects of drug therapy are also explored.

Students assess the need for assistive devices, including incontinence aids. They also develop knowledge of prescribing medicines and assistive devices. Healthcare pedagogy is covered in relation to educating patients in connection with prescribing medicines.

Education level: Master's level

Admission requirements: Swedish nursing licence plus 60 credits of postgraduate study, or a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing, or current enrolment in the specialist nursing programme with a focus on public health care. In addition, upper secondary level Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3, and English 6/A. Or Swedish level 3 or Swedish as a second language level 3, and English level 2. An equivalence assessment can be made.

Selection: Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
