Science Fiction and Intercultural Encounters
7.5 ECTS creditsNew planets, strange cultures, aliens, monsters, machines, and hybrids: science fiction abounds in meetings between different cultures. In fact, the intercultural encounter is one of the basic ingredients of the science fiction genre. In this thematic course, we study intercultural encounters in science fiction novels, short stories, films and TV series and in the light of science fiction as a literary genre. We also consider the role played by encounters with the unknown in cultural identity formation.
The course involves studying textual and audiovisual fiction as well as academic texts about those and the science-fiction genre, participating in seminar discussions, giving oral presentations, and producing written analyses.
