Literature in English, 1900–1950
Target group and prerequisites
The course is primarily intended for doctoral students in English. Subject to availability, it is also open to doctoral students in Comparative Literature
Aims
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- give an account of and analyse selected literary works in English from the period 1900-1950,
- identify and analyse problems related to the writing of literary history, especially issues of period and genre,
- critically evaluate different types of literary and cultural criticism applied in readings of the primary texts,
- give examples of how English-language literature and literary history of the period in question relate to gender equality.
Course Content
The course is based to a great extent on independent reading of literary texts according to a reading list which also allows room for the students’ own selections. In addition to the primary texts, students read relevant sections of one or more reference works and at least three critical or theoretical texts, relevant to the period and chosen in consultation with the teacher. Individual reading is combined with a seminar series focused on selected works from the reading list.
Students are expected to prepare carefully for each seminar and participate actively in seminar discussion.
Examination
Assessment is based on individual written hand-in assignments and individual oral
presentations.
