Directed study in English Linguistics
In this individual, independent study course, the PhD student works with mapping published research within a delimited research area connected to the PhD student’s dissertation research. The PhD student will identify a theoretical, methodological, or empirical research field, and reviews published research in the area. Findings from the review are then synthesized in a review paper or book chapter, where the student also situates their own research in relation to the review.
Aims
Upon completion of the course, the PhD student should be able to
- identify and account for relevant linguistic research in a delimited research area selected on the basis of a theory, methodology, or an empirical theme,
- evaluate and synthesize published research within the selected research field, and
- compile findings from the review of literature in a scientific overview text, and situate the PhD student’s own research in relation to the findings.
Examination
The learning objectives are examined in an individual, written hand-in assignment.
