Advanced Data Skills for Research and Industry
This course is part of the EXACT PhD school. The course has three sessions, one session per month, starting from April 2025 until June 2025.
Learning outcomes
After completed course the research education student should know:
•Explain and apply key concepts of data science in their research context.
•Create effective data visualizations to communicate research findings.
•Discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by big data in various researchcontexts.
•Evaluate and address ethical considerations in data collection, analysis, andpresentation.
•Apply data governance principles to ensure compliance with relevant regulations andprivacy standards.
•Demonstrate the ability to select and use appropriate data analysis tools and techniquesfor specific research questions.

Course content
The course is structured into three sessions, each focusing on key aspects of data skills for research and industry:
Session 1: Foundations of Data Science and Analysis
•Introduction to key concepts of data science
•Overview of data types and structures
•Introduction to data analysis tools and techniques
Session 2: Data Visualization and Big Data Concepts
• Principles and techniques for effective data visualization
• Introduction to big data: challenges and opportunities
• Practical workshop on data visualization tools
Session 3: Data Ethics, Governance, and Applied Project
• Ethical considerations in data collection, analysis, and presentation
• Data governance principles and privacy regulations
• Project: Applying learned concepts to a research scenario
Students will work on a project that applies the learned concepts to their specific research areas throughout the course.
Reading list
Articles and other types of literature will be presented before the course starts. Key readings may include:
1. Selected chapters from the latest data science books.
2. Relevant research papers demonstrating data science applications in various fields
3. Online tutorials for data visualization tools
4. Key sections of applicable data protection regulations
Examination
For a Pass grade, doctoral students are required to:
1. Actively participate in all three sessions
2. Complete a group project applying course concepts to a research scenario
3. Present project findings with emphasis on ethical considerations and data governance
