From research at Karlstad University to research at Google
2017-01-20Julio Angulo was awarded his doctorate at Karlstad University in 2015 and is now doing research on user experience at Google. On 13 January he visited Karlstad University to give a lecture on his journey from Karlstad to Google to inspire students.
”During my time at Karlstad University I met many clever and motivated students. I want my lecture to inspire them to dare to take chances, find their passion and work hard for it”, says Julio Angulo.
Julio Angulo is from Mexico, but studied and earned his Bachelor’s degree in computer science in Canada. Then he moved to Sweden to at Master ’s level.
Doctoral studies at Karlstad University
Between 2010 and 2015 Julio Angulo pursued doctoral studies at Karlstad University on the human–computer interface with a focus on personal privacy and security. He worked, for instance, on developing a tool enabling users to follow and understand what is happening with all the data we send over the Internet.
”A great deal of my research at Karlstad University was part of projects linked to the Privacy and Security Research Group (PriSec) within Computer Science. The research environment is international and well known in their focus areas, which was a contributing factor for me getting in contact with Google.”
Research project led to internship, which led to employment
As a researcher at Karlstad University, Julio worked on a research project funded by Google, which resulted in an internship.
”After an internship in the summer of 2014, when I got the opportunity to test what it was like to work at Google, I realized that this was where I wanted to be,” says Julio Angulo.
Presently, he is employed at Google in Stockholm to do research on communication and video conversations.
”Working at Google has many benefits, for example, nice offices, free lunch and access to a gym, but it also requires hard work and flexibility. Getting a job in tough competition is not easy but not impossible either. My advice to those students who want to find their dream job is to work hard during your studies. Internships are good door openers as well as a good way to meet new people.”
