Computer Science invited local companies to a thesis networking event
2024-11-04On Wednesday, October 30, the computer science department hosted a thesis project fair to help establish connections between students who have applied for thesis projects for the spring and potential sponsors.
11 companies and organizations participated along with around 40 students.
"It was great to see so many people come and want to participate. We from the department started by explaining the role of a thesis project in the program, what a thesis assignment could involve, and what is expected from the project sponsors. Then, each company had about 5 minutes to introduce themselves and share the ideas they have for thesis projects in the spring. The fair concluded with an open mingling session where students and sponsors had coffee together and connected for potential future collaborations," says Johan Eklund from the computer science department, who organized the event.
The computer science department has an unusually large group of students in their final year. Over 70 students have applied for thesis projects at the bachelor's level, and 12 students at the master's level.
"This is an all-time high, so this event felt very relevant. From the department’s perspective, we see great value in students, especially at the bachelor's level but also at the master's level when appropriate, having an external sponsor. It gives students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired during their studies in a 'real-world' setting. Additionally, we know that sponsors often appreciate having our students as thesis interns, and it frequently leads to employment," concludes Johan Eklund.
