Seminarium: Belong. Geographies of Place, Self, and Home
Warmly welcome to a seminar with associate professor Orhon Mayadar from University of Hawaii.
Belong: Geographies of Place, Self, and Home
In this talk, I will center my discussion on a simple but important question about belonging, especially when people are violently uprooted and displaced and are forced to forge pathways to rebuild their lives in new places. This is not just an intellectual exercise but a deeply personal struggle millions of people face worldwide. Drawing on six years of ethnographic research in Tucson, Arizona, my research centers the voices of 83 refugees through in-depth interviews. Examining their experiences before, during, and after displacement, I will discuss some of my findings related to the ongoing challenges refugees face in rebuilding their lives beyond mere survival.
Orhon Mayadar is a political geographer, especially interested in questions of power, ideology, mobility, and identity within the context of shifting political landscapes. https://geography.manoa.hawaii.edu/orhon-myadar/https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=eIs5DicAAAAJ&hl=en
