Transgender Studies Research Residency
Funded by GEXcel International Collegium
The Trans Studies Research Residency programme started in February 2017 as an initiative of the Trans Studies research group working at the Centre for Gender Studies. The aim is to create an inspiring space for collaboration between trans scholars as well as offer much needed time for focusing on research and writing. The residency will take place for the fourth time in spring 2019. Trans Studies at CGF approach the term trans as an umbrella term to address a wide range of intersectional, gender nonconforming positions.
The residency programme represents one of several academic activities at the Centre devoted to Transgender Studies as an emerging field of research. Apart from the residencies, the Centre for Gender Studies regularly hosts workshops, lectures series and conferences within the area of Trans Studies, most recently the 5th Nordic Transgender Studies Network Conference (September 2018). Being one of the research strands at CGF, Transgender Studies is also well embedded in its undergraduate and graduate courses curricula. However, the residency programme has emerged out of the joint initiative of a range of Trans academics in the North European context who aim to further establish Transgender Studies as part of the Nordic Gender Studies landscape.
For the duration of the residency, the Centre will provide the residents with a calm and supportive research environment with access to office space. Additionally, it covers accommodation as well as contributes to, or covers fully, travel expenses. Unfortunately, it does not provide a honorarium.
The Trans Studies Research Residency is a flexible form of working together which might include presenting your work as part of the Gender Studies seminars, small workshops together or just discussions and feedback from the other residents and local trans scholars. The main purpose of the residency is to allow researchers time and room for focusing on their own research and do this in a shared space. The call explicitly invites researchers from all academic degrees including artistic researchers, MA students, PhD students, junior researchers, and further merited scholars.
The residency programme takes place annually and the calls are announced via the facebook page as well as on the Centre’s homepage.
The Centre for Gender Studies/Centrum för genusforskning (CGF) at Karlstad University is shaped by four main research streams such as Transgender Studies, Masculinity Studies, Action for Organisational Change, as well as Gender, Health and Technology Studies. The Centre is working in close collaboration with the Gender Studies units at Linköping University and Örebro University facilitated through the GEXcel platform. GEXcel both links these universities through shared events as well as research internationalisation.
“This was a truly enjoyable stay at CGF. I appreciated the opportunity to spend time with good people who are also exciting thinkers working in trans studies. It will be great to stay in touch and continue to collaborate!”
Eric Plemons, Associate Prof. in Medical Anthropology, Co-Chair of the Trans Studies Research Cluster, University of Arizona, USA.
"The residency was a truly unique experience that allowed me to engage with brilliant scholars in an inviting environment. Not only was I able to add new insights to my project, but I feel that I made strong friendships and expanded my professional network. The city and university are situated in an idyllic part of Sweden, and I'll never forget the serene forest and riverside walks that I took. I feel both lucky and honoured to have taken part in this residency. "
Chris Casey Chevallier, PhD in Geography, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
“This residency has been such an inspirational experience!! Apart from advice and feedback from the seminars, there is a lot I am bringing back home. Thank you!”
