Transgender Studies Research Residency
The Trans Studies Research Residency programme has a main focus on academic and artistic researchers, ranging from doctoral students to full professors, working in the field of Trans Studies. The programme has been running since February 2017. The Trans Studies Research Platform and the residency are located in the department of Gender Studies at Karlstad University.
The aim of the Trans Studies Research Residencies is to create an inspiring space for collaboration between trans scholars as well as offer much needed time for focusing on research and writing. The residencies are a relational form of working together which might include presenting ongoing research in seminars, meeting for feedback workshops, engaging in reading group meetings, or just spending time together and having meals with colleagues in the lunch room and coffee breaks. It is meant as a space that allows trans researchers time and space to focus on their own work in a supportive environment.
For the duration of the residency, the department of Gender Studies provides the residents with a calm and collegial work environment with access to an office space.
The residency is self-funded. However, we can assist in funding applications for the scholars who are planning to visit us. Apart from the Trans Research Residency, visitors are always welcome to work with us all year round as individual visiting scholars.
Originally, the Trans Studies Research Platform was one of four research foci at the Centre for Gender Studies at Kau (together with Critical Masculinity Studies, Gender/Health/Technology and Organisational Change). The Centre has now closed down due to new, university-internal requirements for centre-building activities. However, Gender Studies as a department continues to exist. It is a small unit with approx. 8 full-time employees including one full professor, and happy to host the Platform and future residents.
“This was a truly enjoyable stay at CGF. I appreciated the opportunity to spend time with good people who are also exciting thinkers working in trans studies. It will be great to stay in touch and continue to collaborate!”
Eric Plemons, Associate Prof. in Medical Anthropology, Co-Chair of the Trans Studies Research Cluster, University of Arizona, USA.
"The residency was a truly unique experience that allowed me to engage with brilliant scholars in an inviting environment. Not only was I able to add new insights to my project, but I feel that I made strong friendships and expanded my professional network. The city and university are situated in an idyllic part of Sweden, and I'll never forget the serene forest and riverside walks that I took. I feel both lucky and honoured to have taken part in this residency. "
Chris Casey Chevallier, PhD in Geography, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
“This residency has been such an inspirational experience!! Apart from advice and feedback from the seminars, there is a lot I am bringing back home. Thank you!”
Elena María Gallardo Nieto, PhD student in Education, University Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain.
